It only feels like another struggle for freedom from the foreign goods like the Swadeshi Movement carried out during the struggle for Independence in 1905. A small movement started in Calcutta, that aimed to oust the foreign merchandise and promote the purchase of local goods.

Understanding the simple economics of how the outsiders (brands) earn and grow to become business tycoons is quite important for each individual in this country. A brand that has no Indian roots, sells no Indian products and does not understand our emotional and commercial beliefs is capable of providing every household item to our doorstep, by only becoming the carrier of the goods and not the manufacturer. What we see today, most of the youth is comfortable purchasing items, big or small, from the internet and barely making a visit to the local store to purchase anything that has forced the local vendors to subscribe to the Delivery Service Provider’s plan and continue to do business. The call for going vocal for local businesses is immensely important at this stage of being a developing nation, as it would give us the opportunity to grow the revenue of the country and emerge as a developed nation in the coming decades.

A small change in the thinking of the consumer to avoid the purchase of the foreign goods & services and choose its local substitute would ensure the money spent in a shop is further used for the betterment of the people of your country and not someone else in some other nation. A small hand-printing business in Jaipur has seen growth in revenue for one reason that some Entrepreneur saw the potential in using the already available form of art & produce and connecting it with the world through internet would help him establish a company and hire local talent, labour, services and doing all this while keeping the local art alive.

Thinking vividly about the possibility that we can create and accommodate our own products would help our country to achieve goals and dream of touching a new height each year as we move forward.

Being vocal about the local business would help it become the next big brand. Wouldn’t it be amazing to watch a Hollywood actor walk the Red Carpet in a hand stitched khadi kurti someday?
